Urban Decay Naked Ultimate Basics Review and Tutorial!

Urban Decay Naked Ultimate Basics Palette                                   Review and Tutorial!

If you seen my review for the smaller Naked 1 basics palette you're going to be very surprised at this review. To sum up the Naked Basics 1 & 2 sucked some hardcore balls. They were horrible for their spendy price tag. The colors were patchy, hard and powdery feeling, half of them were not pigmented AT ALL, and the colors wouldn't blend or stay on very long, etc.
So for the Naked Ultimate Basics which is essentially the naked 4 in the group and the full size version of the Naked Basics 1 & 2. I wasn't even going to buy it because of how bad I hated the smaller versions but I realized if  I was going to make anything out of this beauty blogging/ vlogging thing I had to get the things that were super hyped up and popular. God! Was this popular. Every one was so excited for this release. I guess they always are for Naked releases. I totally get it. The other Naked palettes are just heaven! If you don't like them it's only because you don't own them. So because of all of that I purchased it right when Sephora started carrying it. Urban Decays website had it first but a girls gotta get her points!

So It finally arrived in a package of a few other things I had ordered including another palette (the chocolate shop which I've already reviewed). I was pretty excited about everything I got and especially this since I was able to get it and it wasn't sold out like they usually are after an hour if that.

When it had been announced but not yet released I thought it would be a bigger palette then pictures like this one started being released

And I thought it was going to be super tiny. Hell if it was the size or smaller than my hand we would be talking two maybelline quads max, and that would be pushing it. Luckily when it came in the mail I opened it and it was just as I had originally expected. A basic naked palette cut in half and stacked on top of each other instead of side to side. It's a decent size.
The packaging is adorable! It's plastic but it's got this metal sunburst, rose gold look to it with engraved or 3D like "rays". It reminds me somewhat of a sunburst design so that's why im calling them rays.

Inside the palette contains a full size mirror and a small two sided brush. This differs from the original palette in that its half the size of the normal full size Naked Palette Double Ended brushes. The brush has also changed in that it has the original wider end for crease and blending but then on the other end instead of a normal shadow brush as usual it has a small condensed brush good for smaller detailed areas or really smokey looks on the lash line. I wouldn't use it for applying shadow. I would probably prefer the bigger side for that if this was my only brush but it works. Honestly, most palettes don't have any brushes and you have to purchase your own so it's kinda great that it comes with something and it's ready to go right out of the box even for total make up newbs.

Now when it comes to the formula this is where I was really scared of bad quality (only because of the smaller basics, not the other Naked full size palettes.). I was pleasantly surprised. Every single color shows up on my skin and the formula is sooo unbelievably buttery and soft and pigmented. I really couldn't ask for better quality when it comes to the formula. They are extremely blendable and have decent lasting power. Without primer they last around 8 hours, with primer around 10 hours and with primer and setting spray upwards of 14-16 hours. I always touch up throughout the day but honestly I usually don't have to with this set unless I've sweated a ton or slept on it for a few hours.

Below are the original smaller basics. These swatch pictures have a ton of product on them to get them to show. As you can see a lot of them are invisible as one honest photographer shows in the third picture down. See how patchy they are even though they piled a ton of product on? If you wish to know more about this horrible palette I have already reviewed it on this blog.

There's plenty of great looks you can make with this palette alone, especially since matte eyeshadow is totally in right now. I personally like to add some shimmer so if im just using this palette Blow, the highlight shade, is great for that but these colors can go with most shimmer shades you probably already own. Not to mention this is just a great basics palette to own. It's always great to have great basic colors to transition more fun and out there looks or really dark looks or really any looks so this palette is great for that too. Because of this it's most likely a palette you will be reaching for daily at least for a beautiful transition shade or highlight of lid color or just an entirely beautiful and unique look built from this palette.

From nudes, to plums, to ambers and oranges to blacks to creams this is a perfect fall and winter color palette. They really hit the release date right out of the park. I would wear these all year but for day and night looks these colors are very call and winter. They have variations of all of the colors from the original Basics 1 & 2 mini palettes and new colors that were never in those palettes. If you own basics 1 & 2 it's going to kind of be a judgement call on whether or not this is something that you "need" considering most of the colors are not quite but almost repeats. At $54 USD for the palette you may find another palette with a lot more colors you don't have rather than this palette with a lot of colors you basically own. I still stand by the fact that those sick and this palette rocks and has none of the problems the original basics did but again that's all just up to what you think.
On the other hand if you didn't like or don't own those Basics palettes I do think this is something you need to add to your makeup wardrobe no matter who you are from total beginner to full time famous makeup artist. This is just a great quality staple that every makeup kit needs.

Over all it is a little spendy but when you think of the cost of single shadows from this brand and similar quality bramds at around $21 USD per single shadow this isn't such a bad deal for a good solid palette with a ton of color options to choose from for endless looks. It's also very travel friendly as it clicks shut and is pretty secure from that point until you manually open it up again.

Each urban decay single below is $21 USD and the Naked Palettes are $54 USD. The Naked 3 (my favorite) is pictured below the singles.

I give this palette 4.5/5 stars. The price is kinda high, they went with a plastic case instead of a metal one and the smaller end of the brush isn't what I would have chosen if I could only pick two types of brushes, but even those things are very small when it comes to all the pros you get with this palette. It is a permanent palette so don't rush out If you don't have the money right now and don't worry if it's sold out anywhere or if you run out of your palette. It will be around for a while and not hard to find as these palettes are extremely popular

Now I've already done at least one Naked Basics Tutorial at least on this blog but per my usual review layout I will be adding another since I was going to add this one today anyway. I might as well kill two birds with one stone so here goes!

                                 TUTORIAL!

Actual color names and swatches so you can use similar colors if you don't own this palette:

Tape method for clean eyeshadow lines:

Don't go past this point and if you do clean it off when done. Directions for that later:

Eyeshadow diagram of areas I'm mentioning in tutorial:

First you want to do all your prepping. You don't want to just wake up and start putting your makeup on because that's going to breed bacteria in your makeup and on your brushes and sponges. Your makeup also lasts longer and looks better if you use a clean and moisturized but oil free "canvas." So wash your face and moisturize or whatever your skin care regimen is. I use the proactive system usually but lately I've had to use st ives exfoliating scrub and proactives advanced oil control lotion to help control my oil output since that all but wipes out my makeup by mid day. Also don't do your face makeup until after your eyes are done because every eyeshadow has some fall out and even If you can't see it it makes a dark shadow under and on the side of your eyes. We will clean up and I can and will prove this to you later on.
Also, unless otherwise specified use your crease brush in a back and forth windshield wiping motion just at the top of and above your natural crease. This widens your eyes, especially if you have hooded eyes. If you for some reason want your eyes to look smaller just keep it in your natural crease. THEN when you're in your outer third and outer V you will use your crease brush or fluffy blending brush or whatever brush you prefer and apply eyeshadow in small, fluffy, circular motions. Next, when you're applying to your lid (the inner two thirds of your eye lid), your inner v and your inner eye area next to your nose you will use a soft patting motion. In your arch, waterline, anywhere you put eyeliner, you will use a drawing motion. You will literally be drawing straight lines. You can use that same liner brush or thin shadow brush to blend the arch back and forth after that. In your under eyebrow area under your brow but right at the top of your crease color you will use a large fluffy brush and a soft and wide swiping outward motion. You will also always tap off excess shadow with each dip into your makeup because the idea is to slowly build and blend colors not accidentally add too much and try to figure out a way to fix it. It just looks nicer this way. Don't forget unless otherwise specified you always blend your shadows after application. If your asked to blend from the outer v into the crease you will start with small circular motions then move into windshield wiper motion. You always blend in the manner you applied.

Next add concealer on your lids to right under your brows. Then add a colorless eye or face primer to your brows and do your brows as usual and then set them with a setting powder and line all around the edges of the brow, but only on your skin with concealer and blend in carefully. All of these things help keep brows in place all day. Then add eye primer to your lids.

Step two: grab your contour brush and put the color Commando in contour area. That is the top of natural crease and above crease area:

Step three: in the same place put the color Tempted then on top of that faith.

Step four: in natural crease with a crease brush put a thin line of  Lethal and then blend out well.

Step five: Blend again with a very small amount of Extra Bitter in Crease then on top of contour shade grab Nude and blend everything at top of contour shade.

Step six: grab your eyeshadow brush and the color Pregame and put it all over entire lid. Then ln top of that put the color blow from the inner V to inner two halves of lid and bottom waterline.
Then if it's too light in the crease put a small amount of Lethal perfectly back in your crease. Only if you have to.

Step seven: use a similar color to your skin or a powder foundation and swipe with fluffy brush from top of contour color to under brow then with a skinny ended brush like the small end of the included brush.

Step eight: with liner brush tightline upper lash line area with Blackjack and on bottom waterline put Lethal on bottom lashes on the actual lashes. Next put Blackjack in outer half of waterline only where the lashes are.

Step nine:
Clean up with wet wipe or tissue with lotion under eye and on side of eye even if you don't see anything. It will brighten everything up. Then add winged liner and put blackjack over that immediately so it doesn't bleed and it mattifies the liner for a more seductive look

Step ten: then add two coats each of two different mascaras or just however you do it. Add face primer. Press it into pores instead of swiping it around. Add foundation from middle of the face outwards. Then add concealer. I put it under eye and imperfections. Add light bronzer where you would contour on cheeks and nose to add warmth. Then add blush to apples of cheeks then highlighter on cheekbones, temples, mid forehead, bridge of nose, cupids bow, and mid chin. Then add lipstick and a little bronzer on neck and chest to make sure everything matches. Add setting spray, loose powder or finishing powder or any of the combination.
